In 1964, he graduated from the Huang Yongyu Studio of the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in printmaking. His works were awarded the first prize in the "Hunan Provincial Art Exhibition" in 1965, 1979 and 1985, and the prize for outstanding works in the 8th National Printmaking Exhibition in 1983.

His works were selected for the "14th World Student Art Exhibition" in Marseille, France in 1963, "Modern Chinese Printmaking Exhibition" in Tokyo, Japan in 1980 ("Spring News" was collected by the Tokyo Art Museum), and in 1981 he was selected for the "World Student Art Exhibition" in Paris, France. In 1981, "Fifty Years of Chinese Woodcut Exhibition", Paris, France; "Chinese Masters Invitation Exhibition", University of Illinois, U.S.A., 1984; "Chinese Masters Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition", Taipei, Taiwan, 1985. "Ink Painting Exhibition in Hong Kong in 1991 and 1994, Hong Kong Trade Development Council Art Collection Exhibition in 2000, and the Third National Oil Painting Exhibition in 2003. Hu has published "Hu Resistance Painting Collection".

Hu's artistic achievements have been compiled into the "Who's Who in the World" published by Ouropa Publishing Company, London, England in 1988-89, and various editions of "Dictionary of Modern Chinese Artists", "Who's Who of Modern Chinese Artists Chinese Art Yearbook", "Chinese New Literary and Artistic Artists", "The Complete Works of Modern Chinese Artists", "Sixty Years of Chinese Printmaking", "Chinese Prints and Drawings", and "Chinese Artists", "Sixty Years of Chinese Printmaking". Approved as a member of China Artists Association in 1982. He has served as the first and second director of the Chinese Printmakers Association, executive director of the Hunan Artists Association, and director of the Hunan Provincial Printmaking Art Committee, among other public positions.
